About the Work
A claim sheet from the Los Angeles Local 767 Music Union. It’s made out against Duke Ellington’s Jump for Joy, Inc., filed by musicians who performed at the Los Angeles Mayan Theater in July 1941. Opened by the American Federation of Musicians, the Local 767 operated for Black musicians who were often denied access to white Hollywood jazz clubs. It was not only a space to discuss and rehearse, but a community center for the Black community at large.
