This print is a part of series entitled Nova Reperta (New Inventions of Modern Times). Each of the nineteen prints depict scenes of progress in science and engineering. This particular print shows each stage of cannon production from smelting to use in the battlefield.

In een artilleriewerkplaats maken enkele ijzergieters een kanon gereed. Boven de smeltoven de uitvinder van het buskruit, Berthold Schwartz. Op de achtergrond de belegering van een stad door kanonnen. De prent heeft een Latijns onderschrift en maakt deel uit van een negentiendelige serie over nieuwe uitvindingen en ontdekkingen.
