About the Work

Curationist LogoCurationist Object Description
Set on a cacao plantation, this photograph is representative of the impact of the global expansion of European colonialism. Cacao was native to Mexico, the site of New Spain. Its traditional use by Indigenous peoples was carried over to Europe where it was mixed with sugar and became a widely popular drink. The environmental conditions, along with forced labor and then smallholder farming in West Africa made the proliferation of cacao harvesting possible.
Rijksmuseum Object Description
Onderdeel van Fotoalbum met opnames van Kameroen rond 1899.
