About the Work
Belvedere Apollo is a statue housed in the Octagonal Court of the Pio Clementino Museum at the Vatican, captured here by the Italian photography studio, Fratelli Alinari. The statue is of Roman origin, created in the mid-second century, and has been in the Vatican Palace since at least 1508. It is a copy of a bronze statue by the Greek sculptor Leochares from around 330-320 BCE. The left hand originally held a bow, to go with the quiver of arrows on the statue's back. Slithering up the tree stump on Apollo's right is Python, the serpent from Greek mythology, who lived at the center of the Earth and was slain by Apollo.
