Curationist Object DescriptionThe Dutch ship Witte Leeuw, or White Lion in English, was part of a Dutch East India Company (VOC) fleet that traveled to Indonesia. The Witte Leeuw sank on its return trip to the Netherlands bringing luxury food and merchandise from the region. Among porcelain and other goods, loose peppercorns were found in the wreckage in 1976 off the coast of Saint Helena island in the Atlantic.

Losse peperkorrels, afkomstig uit het wrak van het V.O.C.-schip 'Witte Leeuw'. Volgens de berger van het scheepswrak Robert Sténuit werd veel peper gevonden. Bij het wegzuigen van het afdekkende zand kwam de peper bloot te liggen, die vervolgens door hun lichte gewicht als een donkere wolk in het zeewater vervloog. Deze peperkorrels waren als een klont aan elkaar gekoekt en zijn tijdens het drogen weer los geraakt.
