About the Work

Curationist LogoCurationist Object Description
This intricately crafted snuffbox was made by renowned French goldsmith Daniel Gouers, who was conisdered a master of his trade. Having gained recognition from the French court, Gouers' work was favored by royalty. Despite his professional sucess, Gouers' life was marked by personal struggles, including bankruptcy and imprisonment.

This box also features a miniature based on a painting by Rosalba Carriera, who was instrumental in popularizing pastels in portraiture, a medium that allowed her to achieve a softer, more lifelike quality than oil painting. Her clientele included European aristocrats and royals, making her a highly sought-after artist.

Gold boxes were often given by French monarchs to reward court service, with the box's value reflecting the recipient's status.
