About the Work

Cleveland Museum of Art Object Description
Vasakasajja has been described as Nayika who arranges the bed for making love. She is seated on a bed of leaves by a pond, anxiously waiting for her lover. The painter has faithfully followed the poet’s description of the scene and depicted the fair-complexioned Nayika radiating against the otherwise dark surrounding, illuminating the tryst.

She was trying to hide the glow of her body with a blue sari. Sitting there she would be startled with sounds of the wind and water, birds and animals, and would look all around wondering whether Krishna had come. Awaiting the arrival of Krishna, the Nayika in the grove resembled a bird in the cage.
