Every nude portrait engages with at least three gazes: those of the subject, the artist, and the viewer. This trio forms a matrix of power and consent, revealing crucial information about how the piece was created and how it might have been seen at the time. The angle of a model’s eyes can make the difference between erotic, casual, and matter-of-fact. This collection contains ancient and classical examples of nudity in art, as well as more recent works that riff on these predecessors. Viewed together, they indicate shifting attitudes toward objectification and new possibilities for subjects to claim agency through nudity.
