About the work

In George Catlin's Dance to the Berdash, men of the Fox tribe gather in dance. The only figure not in motion is dressed in women's clothing and gazes out at the viewer. The term berdache is a European term derogatorily applied to Indigenous individuals who did not conform to the gender binary. As Catlin documented Native American tribes, he witnessed a dance honoring a Two-Spirit individual. From Catlin's colonial point of view, the figure was a berdache and the ceremony was comedic. In contrast, the Fox tribe embraces and celebrates Two-Spirit people, or i-coo-coo-a, as sacred figures.
