About the Work
In this anatomical study of a liver, the cutting tools and pins are visible and there is no background scenery to distract from the reality of human dissection. This plate is from a 1685 publication titled Anatomia humani corporis by anatomist Govert Bidloo and is illustrated by Gerard de Lairesse. Though the publication was not a commercial success, Bidloo was a pioneer in anatomy, including the observation and description of human fingerprints. The book is now regarded as an exceptional example of a Baroque anatomical atlas.
