Long Cloth

About the work

curationist logo

The stylized patterning of pineapples in this cloth is evocative of European lace. The blending of two divergent attributes reflects the nature of the global textile economy in the early 1700s. Textile manufacturers in India appealed to the Indonesian market which favored a more Western image. The influence of European commercial expansion at the time played a monumental role in the design of textiles and other home goods in the area.
