Acerca de la obra
Shan shui is a style of traditional Chinese landscape painting, in which artists use ink and brushes to depict features like mountains, rivers, and trees. The ink and brushes are the same as those used for calligraphy, and shanshui painters often draw on calligraphic brush strokes in their works. Yuan Dynasty artist and government official Zhao Mengfu helped pioneer this style. In Twin Pines, Level Distance, Zhao Mengfu uses the calligraphic flying white style to paint the rocks, and outlined the pines in seal script. He further emphasized the relationship between text and painting by including an in-depth inscription commenting on his own landscape painting technique. Scholars argue that this expressive style goes beyond immediate visual representation to emphasize the “rhythms” of the natural world.
