Brush holder with Gathering at the Orchid Pavilion

An intricate and elaborate scene full of activity is meticulously carved into the side of an elegantly mottled green jade stone. The scene depicts a gathering celebrating the Spring Purification Festival. Dozens of poets held a poetry competition at the Orchid Pavilion at the direction of the notable calligrapher Wang Xizhi in the 4th century. The scene is emblematic of the brushes it held which were used to create calligraphic literature and brush paintings.
