About the work

curationist logoCurationist Object Description
Hot chocolate is a traditional drink paired with the activity of ice skating for many Dutch people. A woman in a sumptuous fur coat is enjoying a cup of hot chocolate seemingly on a break from ice skating with others. Chocolate's role as a lighthearted beverage for a carefree pastime is far from its origins in the post-colonial supply chain. Cacao, the main ingredient that makes up chocolate, was originally grown in Mexico and other parts of Mesoamerica. The introduction of European colonization and trade in the seventeenth century brought about slave labor in the Americas and Africa. Unfair labor practices in the cacao trade persist to this day.
