Two Sikh men dueling with wooden swords

About the work

This GIF was created from a 19th century watercolor by an unknown Indian artist. Two Sikh men duel with wooden swords. They are practicing the martial art gatka, which originated in Punjab in the 15th century and continues to be practiced today. The name is probably related to the wooden stick used to fight. Gatka theory and techniques were taught by the Sikh gurus and is considered both spiritual and physical discipline. The GIF brings the artworks to life, mimicking the rhythmic, coordinated movements and the energy of the practitioners.
