Pleated fan and case

  • Year: circa 1780
  • Location: possibly France or Germany

The larger central cartouche of this pleated fan frames a maiden holding basket of cherries and two youths in [François] Boucher (1703-1770) style and is flanked by two smaller side cartouches with heroic landscapes. A celebrated painter, draughtsman, and etcher, Boucher’s idyllic and voluptuous paintings on classical themes, decorative allegories, and pastoral scenes become synonymous with the French Rococo style.

The spaces between are filled with still life ornaments of Louis XVI style and the reverse has a simple landscape without a frame with a pink and blue floral border. The fan is accompanied by a case (pictured here).
