Inspired by an 1885 lithographic version of Vincent Van Gogh’s early masterpiece The Potato Eaters, this animated GIF brings to life the scene of a peasant family sitting around a table, lit by an oil lamp, and eating potatoes from a bowl. The gnarled faces and bony hands of the workers are signs of their harsh life in the countryside. In the animation, the family members chew their food half-heartedly while a piping hot potato bounces back and forth between them, adding a playful–if uncanny–element to the original composition.
